Balancing solutions for USA market

Automatic spindle balancing

Vibration is one of the most underestimated phenomena in Grinding Machines. Due to the coolant presence and grinding-wheels wear, regular Aluminium-Oxide abrasives continuously change its centre of gravity which causes unbalance (i.e. vibration).

This vibration must be compensated and in the appropriate way.

Benefits

The installation of a balancing head delivers the following benefits:

  • Increased spindle lifetime
  • Improved workpiece roughness and shape tolerances
  • Reduced grinding-wheel wear

Ask the Grinding expert

Internal or External balancing head?

In spindles for grinding machines, the majority of the unbalance (i.e. vibration) comes from the grinding wheel. The ideal way to reduce this vibration is to place the balancing head as close as possible to the centre of gravity of the wheel, but this is not possible in all situations. For this reason, Balance Systems offers two different types of balancing heads: INTERNAL or EXTERNAL. As shown in this picture, the first goes into the shaft of the spindle while the second one stays outside of the grinding wheel.

How does a balancing system work?

The balancing head used in the automatic spindle balancing reduces the vibration generated by the grinding wheel while rotating. Unbalance of rotating components is when the centre of gravity is not located on the rotating axis, and it can be represented by a vector force (magnitude   direction). The balancing head is connected to a Control Unit which in turn is connected to an accelerometer for vibration detection. By moving the two masses in the balancing head, as shown in the picture, this system generates a compensating vector force based on the actual vibration of the spindle.
